Oak Bay Comes Up Just Short of BC Crown at Girls Soccer Finals

The Oak Bay Senior Girls soccer team came one game short of being crowned provincial champions following a hard fought 5-2 loss to Handsworth in the Subway Cup Championship Saturday afternoon.

Following winning their pool which included defending champions Burnaby South in the round robin, Oak Bay defeated host school South Delta 1-0 to in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game. Handsworth, who had finished runner up in the 2008 provincial, proved to be too much for the Victoria team who finish second for a record fourth time in the past 15 years.

Rocks Move to 4-0 Following Big Weekend

The Victoria Shamrocks are well on their way to a very successful 2009 campaign, as the team is still undefeated following three victories over the past weekend.

In their first game of the week on Thursday, The Shamrocks went on the road and defeated New Westminster 13-8. Victoria scored six goals in both the first and third periods and had solid goaltending from Nick Patterson who stopped 38 shots in the win. Rhys Duch had 3 goals and 5 assists to lead Victoria.

Island Teams Claim Rugby Titles at AA and AAA Provincials

The 2009 AA and AAA Senior Boys Provincial Rugby Championships concluded Saturday afternoon as both titles were claimed by teams in and around the Mill Bay area.

In the AA championship, 1st ranked and defending champions Brentwood College easily disposed of challenger Rockridge 29-0 to give them back-to-back titles. BCS was lead by Stan Heunis who was named to the Commissioner's XV team as an all-star of the provincial tournament. Other Vancouver Island representatives named to the AA team include Ross Neville of Reynolds, Ewan Jones of Ladysmith and Tino Sutton from Esquimalt.

Seals Claim First Franchise Home Win and Snap 5 Game Losing Skid

It was the perfect Sunday afternoon for a sports fans in Victoria. The hot dogs were frying, the beer was flowing and the Victoria Seals finally won a home game. While the first two are locks at any baseball stadium, the Seals have been having a tough time finding the win column to open their inagural season in the Golden Baseball League. But taking advantage of men on base and strong relief pitching allowed the Seals to pick up a 9-6 win over the Long Beach Armada and move their record to 2-8 in their young expansion season.

Rugby BCs Dominated by Island Teams Going Into Final Round

The 2009 British Columbia High School Rugby Championships are into the final round, as both the AA and AAA championship games will include a Vancouver Island team.

In the AA provincials, Brentwood College defeated Collingwood Secondary 31-14 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship against Rockridge from West Vancouver. This game will be a matchup of the previous two AA champions, as Brentwood won last year's title and Rockridge in 2007, defeating none other than Brentwood in the championship final.

Seals Lick Thier Wounds from Vipers as They Ready for Home Opener

The Victoria Seals are definitely ready to return to Victoria after a tough three game series in Calgary earlier this week. The Seals ran into a Vipers squad with a very hot set of bats who blasted Seals pitching for 40 runs over three games.

Following a 13-3 loss that was called because of rain after five innings in the opening game on Monday, the Seals stuck tight with the Vipers for seven innings in game two, only to allow four runs in the bottom of the eighth to give Calgary a 9-6 win.

It’s not hard to think when you look at Angus Lennox that he might be a football player. At 5”11 250, this soon to be second year at McGill University possess both the body and the talent to be a CIS caliber athlete.

A Mt. Doug grad in 2008, Lennox didn’t play football until he began attending high school in grade nine, but took to it immediately. In his first two years in the game, Lennox helped the Jr. Rams to the playoffs both years as his skills continued to develop.

Victoria Teams Ready for AAA Girls Soccer BCs in Delta

The Oak Bay, Reynolds and Claremont Senior Girls soccer teams are less than 24 removed from beginning their road to The Subway Cup Finals at the 2009 BC Senior Girls AAA Soccer Championships.

The 16 team tournament is a round robin format with each team receiving three games over the first two days, with the winners of the four divisions facing off in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon. Each team attending the tournament is guaranteed five games overall. This year’s tournament will take place at four locations in and around South Delta.

Island Teams in Contention as Rugby BCs Resume Tomorrow

The 2009 British Columbia High School Rugby Championships will take centre stage at UBC this weekend, as the quarter-final matchups have been determined in the AA and AAA tiers following first round games played around the province last Saturday. Not surprisingly several Vancouver Island and Victoria teams still remain as contenders for both championships.

High School Track Season Sprints Towards BCs


The 2009 Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championships took place last Wednesday and Thursday at Centennial Stadium at UVIC. Not only did Victoria once again play a great host for the annual event, but many of the local high schools also dominated numerous events as well as the overall standings.

In the overall point total, Oak Bay High School took the title achieving a staggering 787 total points. Points were accumulated when an athlete from that school placed anywhere in the top tier of each event with the winner gaining 10 points, second 8, third 6 and fourth 5. Coming in behind Oak Bay was Lambrick Park with 333, St. Andrew's with 291, Dover Bay with 269 and Claremont with 217.5.
