Jennifer Jones grinned ear to ear as her final rock went down the ice at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre on Sunday Night. Jones and her rink from Manitoba snuck past hometown favourite Marla Mallet and her rink from BC to capture their second straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts title.
It took overtime for the Dover Bay Dolphins of Naniamo to take down their North Island rivals Cowichan 45-40 to win the 2009 AAA Boys Vancouver Island Basketball Championships in front of a capacity crowd at Mt. Douglas Secondary School. Ted Neilson of Dover Bay won MVP of the tournament.
Dover's win means third place team Oak Bay can challenge Cowichan since the to teams didn't face each other during the Islands. That game will take place at Cowichan on Monday.

The 59th annual AAA Senior Boys Island Basketball Championship is officially set following the North/South challenge game earlier this evening. The host team Mt. Doug had to fight for their right to gain entry to the tournament, but did so following a 73-55 victory over Highland of Comox in Ladysmith tonight.
High school basketball neared the peak of the season this weekend as several Island Championships concluded in and around the Victoria area.
In the AA Boys Islands at Ladysmith, the host squad Ladysmith defeated Brentwood College 65-38 to claim the title. Ladysmith's Jake Hayton won MVP of the tournament. In the consolation game local giant Lambrick Park defeated Nanaimo’s Cedar 81-78 to grab the third and final birth into the AA Boys Provincial Championships in Kamloops from March 4-7.
The much anticipated Scotties Tournament of Hearts will take over the Save on Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria this week. Curling fans across the nation will tune into TSN to watch the best female curlers in Canada duke it out for National supremacy.
The Peninsula Panthers really love drama. The team waited until the final game of the regular season to win the Andy Hebenton Trophy, handed out to the VIJHL Regular Season Champions by shutting out the West Shore Stingers 11-0. This is the second Andy Hebenton Banner for the Cats' as VIJHL league champs, last taking the title back in 2004-05.
The Oak Bay Boys 'AAA' Basketball team defeated the Mt. Doug Rams 87-72 Monday night to claim first place in the regular season heading into this weekend's Lower Island division playoffs.
Oak Bay finished at top spot with a record of 9-1, followed by Belmont at 6-4 and Mt. Doug at 5-5. Claremont and Stelly's finished at a tie with 4-6 records followed by Spectrum to wrap up the bottom half of the division.
It was a tough night for Vikes Basketball as both the Men and Women suffered season ending losses. In the deciding game of the Men's Pacific Division semi-finals the stars aligned for the Trinity Western Spartans in an 87-85 series-clinching win while the Women lost a heartbraker to the UBC Thunderbirds.
