Paul's Blog (Headshots)

The issue of headshots in hockey will be put under the microscope when the NHL's 30 general managers meet this week. Although it will be just one of the many topics discussed during the annual GM meetings from Monday to Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla., it seems to be the one most likely to result in a potential rule change.

Wenger Needs to Splash Some Cash

by Sam Power

When will Arsenals’ kids make the next step? This question has been asked ever since the Gunners’ embarrassment of veteran, world-class riches jumped ship all before 2007. Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Viera, and Theirry Henry all left Arsenal shortly after Arsenal set the football world on fire by winning the English Premier League in 2004—without losing a single game. “The Invincibles” ran into the Chelsea and Manchester United juggernauts over the next seasons, and Arsenal faltered in the Premier League with an exodus of Arsenal stars to follow.

Raptors' Midseason Report Card

by Sam Power

After a horrible 7-13 start, the Toronto Raptors are now fifth in the Eastern Conference and second in the Atlantic—and only five games behind the established Boston Celtics. Here is a breakdown of how the players have performed this season, starting with the back-court.

Champions League Preview

by Sam Power

The final 16 teams are set for the crucial knockout stages of UEFA’s Champions League that begin this Tuesday, February 16th.

The knock out stages consists of a two-legged matchup. Each team gets one home game, and goals carry over to the next game. UEFA Champions League values away goals in the two-legged system as worth more than one traditional goal. For Example, if Arsenal wins 2-1 against Porto at the Emirates Stadium (Arsenal’s home stadium), and loses 1-0 against Porto in Portugal, Porto wins on the away goals rule. The aggregate score would be 2-2, but Porto would advance to the next round. This rule encourages the away team to go for a goal even though they usually face hostile crowds.

The Worst of the Best

Does anybody know where I can go to get my refund on this year’s NBA All-Star weekend? Or maybe just the time back that I wasted watching it on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Is it just me or is the NBA All-Star weekend getting less entertaining every year?

Raptors Clawing up the East

by Sam Power

The Toronto Raptors have gone from and an embarrassingly horrid start, to biting at heels of the big boys in the East. Following the Rap’s disappointing 7-13 start, pundits and fans wrote them off as “soft” and “lackluster.” After the first month of the season, they were referred to as one of the worst defensive teams in NBA history. They were being destroyed on the glass, beat off the dribble, shown up on the perimeter, and manhandled in the post. Coach Jay Triano and the coaching staff were even called out by point guard Jarrett Jack. Jack thought the coaching staff was not holding certain players accountable for poor play (we won’t name names).

More Than Just a Win: A Victory of Saints

by Bolu Adewale

Who Dat? It’s the new Super Bowl champs, the New Orleans Saints! The Saints made history yesterday in Miami at Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts. Drew Brees was named MVP, but the real legacy of this game was how much it meant to the city of New Orleans.

Super Bowl Cynic

by Jammer Karim

Before you read this comment, I would like to add a disclaimer: I am happy the Saints won, and I am by no means discrediting what the Saints accomplished in their 31-17 come-from-behind victory against the Colts. However, as I watched the game, I couldn’t help but think about the flaws of the Super Bowl. So, did the best team win?

NFL Conference Championship Preview: Can the Saints Ride Destiny to the Superbowl?

by Jammer Karim

After what can only be deemed an embarrassing and terrible weekend for this sports writer in last week’s column, he’s back again to disperse his undeniable wisdom on this weekend’s Conference Championship Weekend.

If I had my wish, the Colts would pound the Jets in the first game and setup a triple threat match between the Colts, Saints, and Vikings for the Superbowl. But given that the NFL isn’t run by Vince McMahon, it appears I’m out of luck. Let me give you the set up for what is sure to be a Super Sunday.
