It's official. Refereeing in sports is at a major crossroads.
Yesterday, the fate of one of the last remaining spots in World Cup 2010 between Ireland and France was left in the hands of an officiating crew who allowed a goal to France even though the French team was offside and star Thierry Henry clearly handle the ball before providing an assist for William Gallas. But while this incident gives just one more reason for the Irish to drink away their sorrows, it also raises a critical question in the debate of officiating.
FIFA has ruled according to Law 5 in the Laws of the Game which state that the decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final.
Some may argue that their ruling is ludicrous considering there is video evidence of their mistake, but there is something to be said about sticking to a call made in real time.
As a fellow member of the zebra team (basketball for 8 years, baseball for 5) I understand the pressure that comes with being an official. Judgment and hand eye coordination are on display for officials just as much as for players and sometimes such as Wednesday’s game these skills are more important for a ref.
But while a blown call like this may justify bringing in a video replay system, I feel that FIFA should look at the repercussions before deciding. Over the past decade, the NBA and NFL have adopted video replay and the results have garnered mostly successful reviews, but have also left an indelible mark on the heart of a referee.
A referee in his or her essence attempts to make a judgment – usually in a split second and using their best poker face will defend that judgment nearly every time. In a sense, instant replay can cause an official to lose confidence in their abilities and cause second guessing to occur – which when making a split second decision can lead to some furious reactions.
While anyone who supports using replay may disagree, there is evidence. I watched three NBA officials take 5 minutes to evaluate if a tipped ball in the middle of the 3rd quarter of a Raptors-Bulls game last week, only to keep the same call they originally made. 5 minutes! really? For something so minuscule it makes you wonder if those officials have any confidence left whatsoever.
It’s not that I don’t agree with a replay system, I can admit as an official that certain plays such as a foot on the line to evaluate between a 2 or a 3 or a complete or incomplete pass is a useful tool; but what’s more important the right call on a single play, or the overall mindset of an official?
I also believe that there is something to be said for time and place. Maybe instant replay doesn’t belong on a tipped ball out of bounds in the third quarter of a basketball game, but does belong in the extra time of a soccer match that decides who goes to World Cup and who goes home.
Yet another notion could be that experience is the most important factor. The MLB changed their usual rotation of giving at least one previously inexperienced Umpire an opportunity to work on the World Series this season, as several mistakes by umpires in the playoffs led them to only give games to umpires with previous World Series experience. Experience does lead to confidence, maybe even enough to avoid second guessing through instant replay
For now I think several sports should step back and evaluate how instant replay is instituted but more important how it affects their officials.
