The Victoria Rebels kicked of the 2009 season in style this past Saturday with a 34-21 victory over their division rivals Okanagan Sun at City Centre Stadium.
Victoria quarter back Yannick Rickli threw three touchdown passes, including two to slot back Taylor Takasaki, while Rebels running back Sam Adu added two touchdowns on the ground. Okanagan couldn't seem to stop the Rebels in the first half, as Rickli completed 9 for 10 passes for 214 yards and Adu ran for over 100 of his eventual 166 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Rebel defensive ends Brett Waine and Jake Farley helped limit the Sun's offense, as they applied constant pressure on Okanagan quarter back Derek Mann.
Over 1,800 fans packed into City Centre Stadium in Langford, to see the Rebels make their debut at the facility. The victory was made even sweeter considering it was the first home victory in team history against the Sun.
The Rebels will now take their 1-0 record on the road for the next few weeks, as they get set to take on Kamloops, Chilliwack and South Surrey.
Victoria will next return home to take on the defending Canadian Junior National Champions Vancouver Island on August 29.
