Highlanders Take Out Tide in Final Road Game

The Victoria Highlanders finally put their road troubles behind them this past weekend with a decisive 5-0 win in Tacoma.

Victoria had not previously won away from City Centre stadium since their inaugural game in Spokane back on May 1, which is a critical reason the team will not be advancing to the PDL playoffs. But with the team now looking ahead to next season, a victory such as the one in Tacoma can go a long way in helping build the momentum for a strong squad in 2010.

The scoring in the game was distributed very evenly as Darren Jones, Rory Hunter, Steve Scott, Paul VandenBoomen and leading scorer Geordie Hughes all hit the net for the Highlanders. Goaltender Jose Herrera picked up the shutout for Victoria.

This game followed up an exhibition charity game against city rivals Victoria United on Thursday, a game in which the Highlanders won 3-0 to win the first ever Victoria Charity Shield. The game helped raised over $1000 for the MS Kick for the Cure, a charity that both teams support.

The Highlanders will now return home for the final weekend of the season, as they will take on league leaders Kitsap on Friday, before concluding their inaugural season against the Vancouver Whitecaps U 23 reserve squad on Sunday.
