Highlanders Have Tough Weekend South of the Border

The Victoria Highlanders failed to pick up any ground in the PDL Northwest Division over the weekend, as they dropped consecutive games to Kitsap and Cascade.

In the first game on Friday, the Highlanders took on the division leading Kitsap Pumas in front of a large crowd of over 1,300 in Bremerton. Coach Colin Miller was pleased with the team's performance throughout the game, calming it was the best game he had seen the team play despite the loss. Defender Paul VandenBoomen scored the team's lone goal of the game.

In their second game on Saturday, Victoria traveled down the coast to take on Cascade in Salem, Oregon. The team definitely had revenge on their mind, as Cascade defeated the Highlanders in their last home game last week. Unfortunately Victoria was given an uphill battle early, as midfielder Miguel Romeo was given a red card in the 25th minute, forcing the Highlanders to play the remainder of the game a man short. Cascade took advantage of their handicap en route to a 2-0 victory.

Not all of the news over the weekend was bad however, as 17 year old Darren Jones, who has been on the team's reserve squad to this point, made the trip south and played well enough to be promoted to the first squad for the remainder of the season. Team Captain Rob Veenhof claimed that Jones worked hard and deserves the promotion.

The Highlanders will look to break their three game losing streak next Saturday at City Centre Stadium against the Yakima Reds.
