Oak Bay Comes Up Just Short of BC Crown at Girls Soccer Finals

The Oak Bay Senior Girls soccer team came one game short of being crowned provincial champions following a hard fought 5-2 loss to Handsworth in the Subway Cup Championship Saturday afternoon.

Following winning their pool which included defending champions Burnaby South in the round robin, Oak Bay defeated host school South Delta 1-0 to in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game. Handsworth, who had finished runner up in the 2008 provincial, proved to be too much for the Victoria team who finish second for a record fourth time in the past 15 years.

Handsworth was hands down the best overall team in this year’s championship, as the team went 5-0 en route to winning title, outscoring their opponents 17-3 along the way.

In other final day results from local teams, Claremont defeated Centennial 1-0 to claim 5th in the province, while Reynolds took down Fraser Heights also by a score of 1-0 to take 11th.

Rachel Sawer of Handsworth was awarded both Provincial MVP and the golden boot award as the tournament’s top scorer. Sawer also won the golden boot award last year when Handsworth finished second. Island representatives on the tournament all-star team included Oak Bay’s Taylor Daniel, Claremont’s Lila Batiari and Molly Stone of Reynolds.

Congratulations to all of the Victoria teams for their success at this year’s provincials.
