Victoria Teams Ready for AAA Girls Soccer BCs in Delta

The Oak Bay, Reynolds and Claremont Senior Girls soccer teams are less than 24 removed from beginning their road to The Subway Cup Finals at the 2009 BC Senior Girls AAA Soccer Championships.

The 16 team tournament is a round robin format with each team receiving three games over the first two days, with the winners of the four divisions facing off in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon. Each team attending the tournament is guaranteed five games overall. This year’s tournament will take place at four locations in and around South Delta.

Top Island seed Oak Bay will open the tournament against Tamanawis Thursday morning before taking on Centennial and defending champions Burnaby South. Reynolds round robin opponents will be Salmon Arm, McMath and Elgin Park, while Claremont will face Handsworth, Lord Byng and Terry Fox.

Oak Bay is looking to improve on last season's 4th place BC finish, as the Bays lost in the semi-finals 2-1 to Handsworth before losing in the bronze medal game to South Kamloops. Reynolds and Claremont are also out to improve on last year's BC performances after finishing 8th and 10th respectively in 2008.

A victory at this year's tournament by a Victoria team will be an outstanding accomplishment, considering that no Vancouver Island team has won the AAA Girls BC Soccer Championship since 1985. Oak Bay has come close however, finishing runner up three times.

VSO will have continued results of the tournament through to the Subway Cup Championship on Saturday.
