Victoria Teams Dominate AAA Girls Soccer Islands

The 2009 Vancouver Island AAA Girls Soccer Championships wrapped up yesterday afternoon, as Victoria will be well represented at this year's BCs.

Yesterday began with the final matchups of round robin play that would determine who moved onto the medal round. The four local Victoria teams - Oak Bay, Reynolds, Claremont and Stelly's, all won their respective games against North Island opponents, therefore making the medal round games all-Victoria matchups.

Reynolds held top spot in pool A with a 3-0 record, while Oak Bay finished first in pool B at 2-0-1 meaning the two would match up in the championship game. The game was held close, with only one goal scored by Oak Bay, as the Lady Bays held on to a 1-0 victory to win the title and gain the top Island seed for the provincials.

In the bronze medal game, both Stelly's and Claremont held 2-1 records in the tournament coming in and knew that their final matchup of the season would be played for the right to move on the provincial championships. Although Stelly's was the favorite as the first seed in regular season play, the Spartans of Claremont earned their nickname by upsetting the Stingers 1-0.

This is second straight season that three Victoria teams will represent the Island at the BCs as Oak Bay, Reynolds and Claremont also finished 1, 2 and 3 on the Island last year. But while it may seem a bit like déjà vu, all three teams would like to improve on their results at the provincials this time around, as in 2008 Oak Bay finished 4th, Reynolds 8th and Claremont 9th.

The 2009 AAA Girls Provincial Soccer Championships will be held in South Delta from May 28-30.
