High School Soccer Championships Take Centre Stage

The Vancouver Island AAA Girls Soccer Championships will be taking place through tomorrow at the Pacific Institute for Sporting Excellence at Camosun as well as the Hampton Park soccer field near Tillicum.

This year's Ryan Cup champions Oak Bay Bays lead the Victoria contingent to the tournament, along with Reynolds, Claremont and regular season champions Stelly's. The North Island is represented by NDSS, Francis Kelsey, Vanier and Cow High.

The tournament is set up as a two day round robin format, with the top two teams in each division advancing to the championship round. The winning teams in each division will battle for the Island championship, while the second place finishers will go head to head in order to gain the 3rd and final birth to the BCs. The 2009 AAA Girls Soccer Championships are scheduled to take place in South Delta from May 28-30. Victoria teams swept the births to the provincials last year, as Oak Bay, Reynolds and Claremont all finished in the top 10 in the province.

Meanwhile, the AA Girls Island Championships are also taking place this week, as Parkland, Lambrick Park and SMU will fight it out at Mark Isfeld Secondary in Courtenay. The AA provincials will be held on Vancouver Island this year, as Cahri High in Campbell River will play host.

VSO will continue to cover all of the AA and AAA Senior Girls soccer results through the provincial championships
